Jane Austen House

Edward Austen inherited Chawton House, Along with Godmersham Park, when his adoptive father Mr Knight died. He offered Chawton Cottage to Mrs Austen, who he moved there with Jane, Cassandra and Martha Lloyd in July 1809. It was a happy return to an area that the Austens knew well and friendships from around Steventon were renewed as well as new acquaintances made. The Austen brothers were also frequent visitors.

Here at Chawton Jane Austen revised her three early novels - "Sense and Sensibility", "First Impressions", later renames "Pride and Prejudice" and "Northanger Abbey".
